Of all the gardens that I have worked in over the years this is my favourite. It wasn’t a garden to start with just a boggy valley, then paths were put in, islands and borders were created then I started planting. This was a golden opportunity to grow one of my favourite plant types, candelabra primula.
All the initial plants, only a dozen or so, came from a trip to Scotland where seedlings were growing like twitch. Once back here they were planted into small nursery beds where after a year I could split them and plant into their permanent position.
What a beautiful display they make each spring along with rheum, allium emerging gunnera leaves and matteuccia ferns fronds.
